What to Know When Traveling to China

When you travel to a new country, you will encounter and entirely different culture and different customs. It is likely that you will feel uncomfortable at times, but the experience can still be enjoyable if you mental prepare before hand. When you travel the China there are a few things that you will want to make sure you do.

  1. Know that there is a larger variety of food that is commonly eaten in China. It is easy to become disgusted and feel sick when you hear about some of the parts of the animal that the Chinese eat. However, these things have been eaten for hundreds of years. They will not harm you, and they may even taste good. However, it will not be considered rude if you decide to opt out of eating a specific food.
  2. Know that the definition of rude in China is very different from the definition of rude in the United States. It is not rude to spit, belch, or shove in China. These things are common place and seen every day. Do not worry-you do not have to participate.
  3. Do not be afraid that you do not understand the language. Use the few words you know of Mandarin if you know any. The Chinese are used to people learning their language because there are so many different dialects and languages spoken in China. They will appreciate your effort.
  4. Do not over-pack. Dragging around luggage is not fun. In addition, it is likely you will probably come across many souvenirs that you will want to purchase. You will want room for these things in your suitcase. Bring the essentials, but there will be plenty to do so you do not need to over pack. You will thank yourself when you arrive.
