Traveling in Your Backyard

It is surprising how many vibrant travel locations are located close to your home. These locations are not boring or expensive either. However, if you are having trouble locating some of these locations you may want to try following some of these steps:

  1. Take a map and draw a circle around your home town that includes everything within a one, two, or three hour drive.
  2. Do some research on the Internet and call friends to find out what kinds of fun things there are to do in the circle.  Write everything you hear about down. You are not selecting a location, you are simply seeing what the possibilities are.
  3. Review the possibilities and narrow down the list of things you want to do to about twenty activities.
  4. Then, do a little more research to find prices, hours, and so forth.
  5. Choose the location that fits best with your other plans.

This is such a great idea! I like to take my boys out with a tent in our back yard or even in our living room. It’s not quite the wild, but we can have some of the same experiences. We usually set up rules about what we can bring with us and whether we’re allowed to go back in the house or answer the phone and those kinds of things. It’s a good way to take a break from real life without leaving it far behind.
