One place every traveler who visits Japan must stop at is the Golden Pavilion in Japan. The Golden Pavilion is a temple that is actually completely covered in gold.

The brilliant color of the temple is accented by the natural sunlight. A phoenix perches on the roof of the temple and adds unique decoration.

Originally this temple was intended to be a retirement villa for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Yoshimitsu continued to have influence in the government after his retirement due to his influence over his ten year old son who filled Yoshimitsu’s place as shogun.

After he died, the residence was converted to a temple according to his will.  His legacy has lived on throughout the years and become one of the greatest tourist attractions in Japan.
