Spanish Fork Hot Springs

spanish forkOne of my favorite places to visit in Utah county are the Spanish Fork Hot Springs or Fifth Water Hot Springs.  I have done this trip in the winter and summer. Both seasons make it a very different experience.  During the summer, the hike is about 2 and a half miles (about an hour), its an enjoyable hike that does not much in elevation and follows a rolling stream.

Sometimes during the winter they will close the gate on the way in so they don’t have to plow the road and this adds another 3 miles or so.  The springs themselves are are very pretty including blue water, several well maintained pools of varying temperatures, and a waterfall.  If you are considering camping I would pick a spot on the trail before you reach the springs because its actually flat there.  The great thing about these springs is that the hike in keeps a lot of the riff raff out, unlike midway.  If you are doing a winter hike go well prepared and expect at least a 4 hour hike each way because of the extra 3 miles and the slower going when hiking on snow.

My first trip in the snow ended with a search party of 50 people “rescuing” us because one of the girls roommates got worried because we took longer than expected and there was a storm that had come through during the night.  We were fine it just took much longer than expected because of the closed gate and few feet of snow.  All and all the Spanish Fork Hot Springs is one of my favorite places to visit year round, just remember to be prepared especially in the winter.
