Obtaining a Passport

Getting a passport is much easier than most people think. Here are the steps you need to follow in order to get one:

  1. Fill out the online Application for a U.S. Passport: in order to complete this application you will need to have birthdates, birth places, full names for your parents and your current or former wife or husband if you have one.
  2. Click the “create form” button which will create a PDF form with the information entered. Save it to your computer so that you have it on hand and can make changes.
  3. Print off the PDF and get a passport appropriate photo taken at the nearest photo lab: most department stores have a photo booth where you can get this picture taken. This is a picture where you should not smile, wear sunglasses or hats, or do a variety of other things. There are several requirements for this picture
  4. Take the form, two Passport photos, birth certificate and your driver’s license to the post office. Here you will pay the fees, give them the form, photos and birth certificate and shoe them your driver’s license. They will put it together and mail it off.

In general most people receive their passport and birth certificate back in the following six to eight weeks.
