Geocaching on Vacation: The Free Treasure Hunt

Geocache

For those unfamiliar with geocaching, it is an outdoor scavenger hunt in which a person uses a GPS receiver to locate coordinates at which a “geocache” is hidden. It is a technology-based version of a treasure hunt.

Anyone can hide a cache of any size and log it on to the geocaching website. Signing up for an account is completely free.

Geocaching can be as simple or involved as you want it to be. Some caches are easy, one-time finds, while others can lead you on a trail to multiple geocaches in a row (called “multi-caches”). Either way, anywhere you are on vacation is bound to have hundreds or even thousands of nearby geocaches.

Geocaching on vacation is almost always an option whether you’re staying at a resort on a tropical island or camping in the woods of the Appalachian trail.
