Obtaining a Passport for Your International Trip

If you are intending to travel outside of the United States, you will undoubtedly need a passport. Obtaining a passport involves certain steps which must be followed. They are not too difficult, but the waiting period to obtain your passport may take a while. If you have an international trip planned for the future, the sooner you get on your passport the better!

To get a passport for your trip, follow these steps:

First, you must fill out a DS-11 form to apply for your passport. This can be filled out online, or by hand. Do not sign it until you are instructed to do so.

Second, submit your form in person at an Acceptance facility, or a passport agency.

Third, you will need to submit proof of citizenship. This can include your birth certificate. You will also need to submit photo ID, such as a valid driver’s license.

Fourth, you will need to pay the application fee. This fee differs depending on where you go.

Fifth and last, they will take a photograph of you for your passport. In most cases you are not allowed to smile with your teeth showing.

After everything is done, you will most likely receive your passport in the mail several weeks later. Once you get it, be sure to keep it in a safe location where you will not forget it, or lose it.
