Travel Safety Tips for Winter

Freezing temperatures and an increase in precipitation can make slick roads extremely dangerous to travelers. Road trips are almost always a fun way to reach a fairly close destination, but they must be calculated and planned for a little bit more effectively during the winter.

There are so many beautiful sights to see during this season: snow capped peaks, frosted evergreens, iced over lakes, and powdery ski slopes. However, traveling on the road can  be very dangerous, especially if you are unaware of how to properly do so. Make sure that you check weather and road conditions before making any effort to travel long distance by car.

If needed, make use of snow tires and chains; these will prevent you from sliding as easily on icy lanes and should help to give you more peace of mind. Inform others that you will be driving, just in case of an accident. It is also a good idea to equip your vehicle with extra clothing, food, water, blankets, and supplies.

When officials warn individuals about driving condition, do the smart thing and reschedule your trip for another time when the weather is not so ominous. You can still have a fabulous winter vacation and remain safe if you pay close attention to advisories and make cautionary preparations on your vehicle!

What to Pack in Your Carry-on

Some find flying on an airplane to be dull and tedious.  No matter how long or short of a distance you are traveling, you will need reinforcements to help keep you entertained, relaxed, and satisfied.  The following are several items you should be sure to include in your carry-on baggage the next time you fly:

  1. A book, magazine, and/or mp3 player to help drone out noise and make the flight go faster.  If you have access to a portable DVD player, pack it along with some of your favorite films.
  2. A sweater.  The air conditioning is usually kept on full blast inside of the aircraft, especially on very full flights.
  3. Snacks.  If you are really ambitious, pack a small lunch containing a fulfilling sandwich and your favorite treats the night or morning before you depart.
  4. Drinks to keep you hydrated.  Though water is the best choice, you can also bring along some fruit juice or flavored drinks to satisfy your sweet tooth.
  5. Vitamins, tissues, medicine, and hand sanitizer.  It is common to come down with an illness after flying in a confined space for an extended period of time.  Keep your immune system strong and avoid sitting next to those that are sick.
  6. Homework or extra work from home.  It may seem silly to bring your work with you on vacation, but a long flight is the perfect place to get ahead.  That way, you will not stress during the rest of your trip.

Always be aware of limits and restrictions regarding what you can and cannot bring with you on the air craft.  This will help you avoid lengthy searches when you reach security.  Packing a carry-on bag is all about including the items that make it necessary for you to be comfortable, so make sure to bring everything that you need.  Happy travels!
